Which genres were the most popular with UK audiences and my own audience research?
From reading the BFI statistics yearbook, I have discovered that the most popular genres with UK audiences are animation, action and comedy. Upon doing my own research, I found that horrors and musicals were the most popular in the results from my survey.
Which genre would I like to work in?
The genre that I would like to work in is psychological thrillers. Firstly because this is a very popular genre, but also because I personally enjoy thrillers and think it would be interesting in attempting to create my own film opening of this genre. I also like the affect psychological thrillers can have on an audience if done well.
Which audiences prefer this genre?
From my own research, I found that those who picked the thriller genre as their favourite were aged 15-24 and were both male and female. Those who answered my survey were working class and live North and East London. I also did some wider research and found that my results were quite accurate, although stereotypically, it is believed that males prefer thrillers.
What else do I know about this group of people and what they want to see in a film?
I know that this group of people would want to be thrilled, as younger people like action and excitement. Therefore there should not be any slow moving points in the title sequence in order to keep the audience's attention. Also, young audiences probably enjoy being terrified and are more likely to want to see gory scenes.
What might I have in my film to attract or appeal to them?
In my film, I would like to include a murder scene, and a female main character who is also the murderer. I feel that this would make the film more exciting yet gory which will appeal to our target audience. Female because I want to challenge conventions of thrillers and have a female lead who will attract a female audience.

Who could my wider audience be? How do I know this?
My wider audience could include people 14 years old and younger. This is because children now a days are more desensitised to gore due to the constant exposure to these things thanks to the media and the ease of access to watching psychological thriller films online. Also, males will be a part of my wider audience because in my own research, males typically choose thrillers as their favourite genre.
