Task 6: Analysing 2 Film Title Sequence

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

I chose this film because it has a very iconic and bold title sequence. It starts with the fox logo and trademark trumpet sound, but the trumpet sound is more jazzed up, and it sounds more musical. This helps the movie flow more smoothly and not break the atmosphere. This sequence is mainly titles on still images and video clips of moving lips. The scene then fades to a black background and a pair of red lips. The high contrast between the white, red, and black has creates a vivid imagine that is not likely to be forgotten. The colours used also set a very dramatic, theatrical and sexual tone for the movie. The titles are red and the font looks like dripping blood, suggest that there might be some blood spilled in movie. The chosen typography also helps set the dark tone of the movie. Although we aren't shown the main characters, we get to read the actors and the characters they will be portraying in the titles. Sound plays a key element in this title sequence. "Science Fiction/ Double Feature" is being sung throughout the title sequence. The lyrics of the song summaries the plot and introduce all the main characters. This song is also comical, and harmlessly mocks other films as well as breaking the forth wall illustration that it's going to feature comedy.  The title of the song also gives the genera of the movie: science fiction, as well as indicating to the audience that this is a musical.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street

This title sequence is animation based. The titles integrate with the background. The colour scheme is mainly dull and dark. A lot of blacks, blues and greys, which provides intense contrast to the vibrant, crimson, blood being spilled everywhere. The storm at the beginning is omen, indicating that bad things are ahead. The blood dripping down with the rain hints that there will be a lot of blood shed. The meat grinder indicates that there is going to be a lot of slaughter. The blood keeps spilling and staining everything in its way, creating a dark, sinister and sick atmosphere. People's portraits are being smudged away, hinting at the themes of death and decay. The music that's used is very dramatic, adds suspense and gets you're heart racing. The title sequences shows some gruesome and eerie images, illustrating to the audience that this film's genre is horror/ drama. The titles hint at the plot by showing some images of bloody pies being baked, also turning some stomachs in the process. The fire adds an element of destruction, violence and danger.
