28. Sound in previous students work

As my group and I are creating a title sequence, we have to contemplate the sound we will be creating, diegetic, non-diegetic, if there will be dialogue etc. In this post I will be looking at other students' title sequences and analysing the use of sound.


Duality



From the beginning of this piece, the sound is very low, almost as if something silent yet deadly is stalking you. This already builds up tension in the piece and adds to the fact that this is a thriller as it creates an uncomfortable atmosphere for those watching. The ambient sound of the environment helps reinforce the idea of isolation, which relates to the moving images as there is no one in sight until the end, where the audience find a girl hiding under a table before she is dragged away. There is also diegetic sound like the cracking of the wood in the fire place as well as the tea dripping on the floor. This creates realism as the audience can hear all the sounds and know where they are coming from; they are more informed about what is going on in this surrounding. The increased volume of the girl's heavy breathing under the table also brings the audience closer to her character, as if they are right next to her. They can see her emotions (distraught, scared) as well as hear her reactions to the situation she is in. This is effective as brings the audience right into the movie themselves as they are surrounded by the noises tthe character makes and can hear.




Shutter


At the beginning of the sequence the audience can hear the non- diegetic background music playing and can tell that this is a thriller movie. The beat of the music and eeriness of it are typical conventions of sounds in thriller movies.  This gets the audience to anticipate what will happen next. The ambient sound of the birds chirping is effective as it is quiet, yet helps show the location of the characters as they are in a forest. Ambient sound is also use in this piece as you can hear and see the car driving and the camera taking a picture. Alone, the microphone would not be able to pick up those sounds from where the camera is placed so the creators would have had to record or get sound clips of the driving car and the camera taking a picture to make this more effective. When the camera takes a picture the audience can hear the shutter close and can see a freeze frame of the characters, reinforcing the idea that the audience can see what the camera is capturing. This once again brings the audience into the movie, as they can hear all the sounds in the area and see what is going on.

Looking at these sequences really make me think about the use of sound my group and I will need to capture and create to make an effective title sequence. We would have to consider the diegetic/non-diegetic sounds as well as effectively synchronising the sounds to the moving images. I can tell from these sequences that a lot of thought has gone into them.
