Four Types of Film Openings

1)Titles on black screen
-low budget
-simple way to include institutional information at the beginning
-high contrast
E.g Pulp Fiction
2)Titles on still images
-elaborate: text and visuals hint the tone/genera of the film
- does make the end credits longer
E.g Wimbledon
3)Titles over moving images
-Offer; metaphor and narrative thread
-help to introduce the tone/storyline of the film
E.g Rear Window
4)Titles using animation or motion
-integrated titles with the images
- a lot of digital work/ editing and post production
E.g Casino Royale
My favourite type was the one using animation or motion because they were more creative and entertaining to watch. The titles became part of the moving image and were integrated together with the images shown. These types of titles take a lot of editing and digital work, and it really shows. It was also effective at conveying the tone and genera of the film as well as setting up the atmosphere. It didn’t revel too much though, it just got the audience in the mood for the film, and eager for it to start.
one of my favourite examples of this type of title sequence is 'Catch Me If You Can'
