Task 12 (part1): Target Audience Research

Target Audience: a particular group at which a product (e.g. film) is aimed.
Target audience is important because it creates a sort of goal to aim at. It’s nearly impossible to appeal to everyone. Like in a game of darts: you have to aim to hit a particular target, if you don’t aim precisely you will probably miss.

Deciding on your target audience post- production is helpful for the marketing team, as they can make sure all the elements of the film appear to the specific target audience. Also having a target audience means you have a guaranteed group of people who will go to see your film.

  
It's important to ask yourself this questions when thinking about your target audience
1) Where is your audience located?
2) What gender is your audience?
3) What is their average age?

4) What are their common interests?
5) What's their income?
6) Do they share any common values?


Different genres appeal more to certain people.

•  Horror films appeal more to people in their 20's as they are more mature and old enough to see the film. They are also less likely to be caused emotional trauma by the film, or have any health concerns (e.g prone to heart attacks).
• Western and Gangster films are usually aimed at white, middle aged men. That's why they often feature white, older men as the main/ most roles, to appeal to their target audiences.
• Highschool films are aimed at young girls. They focus on a lot of pop culture references, boys and varies other things important to a teenage girl.

Survey
I made a Survey on Surveymonkey in order to find out about peoples genre preferences. I asked about the takers basic information like their name, age and gender. As well as about the films they like and the locations they like to see.

I also interviewed multiple people to find out their film preferences in even more depth. I picked people of varies genders and ages.
