Task 11:Genre And Audience Research

Responses to BFI's statistic yearbook
Chapter 4 - Genre

Q1. Which 3 genres were most successful at the UK box office?
(in descending order from the best)
 1)comedy

2)Action

 Q3)Animation

2. Which 3 genres were least popular or successful at the UK box office?
(in descending order from the worst)
1) Western

2) Documentary

3) Crime

Q3. Which film genre had the most films released in 2013-2014?
Drama

Q4. How many films in this genre were made?
142 (or 19.9% of the total amount of films)

Q5. How many animated films were made?
34 (or 4.8% of the total amount of films)

Q6. How many action films were made?
43 (or 6% of the total amount of films)

Q7. What does information about genre tell you about:
A) Film production - That quantity doesn't mean success, they actually have to be entertaining, in order to be watched. Animation films take more time and effort to make therefore there are fewer of them.
B) Film audience - Most people enjoy light hearted films like comedies or animated ones. Audiences want exciting films, full of action. That is why documentaries don't do well in box-office. Western and crime films are also seen as boring, overly long and not engaging enough.

Responses to chapter 15 - Audience
Q1. Which age group made up the largest proportion of cinema admissions in the UK?
15-24 year olds

Q2. Which comedy film was most successful with this age group?
The Hangover Part III

Q3. Which film was most popular with the over 50s? What genre is this film?
Quartet - comedy & drama

Q4. Which genres were most popular with men?
Thriller, Action, Comedy

Q.5 Which genres were most popular with women?
Romance and Documentaries

Q6. Uk films appealed most to which audience type?
44-55 and 55+ audience groups

Q7. Which 3 films were most popular with the 7-14 age group? What does this tell us about their preferred genre?
 1) One Direction: This Is Us
 2) Wreck It Ralph
 3) Despicable Me 2
This tells us that the audience for that age group isn't mature and likes animated, vibrant films, and enjoys pop culture. All the above films are colourful, cheery, and playful.

Q8. The 3 most popular films with the 25-34 age group were Frozen, The Croods, and Jack The Giant Slayer. Why might this be and how does this contribute to animation being the most successful genre at the box office?
This might be because people aged between 25-34 usually have children, or have some connection to children, (e.g. have a young niece or nephew). They usually have to accompany children to the cinema to make sure they behave properly and are okay.

Q9. which 3 films were most popular with the 25-34 age group?

1) Django Unchained
2) Fast & Furious 6
 3) Rush

Q10. Which films were most popular with middle class audience (C1 and C2)
C1:
1) Rush
2) Captain Phillips
3) Gravity

C2:
1) Oz The Great And Powerful
2) Fast & Furious 6
3) Despicable Me

Q11. look at the tables for popular films in London and Scotland. What differences are there and what conclusion can you make about the types of films they appear to prefer?
Scotland: 1)Sunshine On Leith, 2) Faith, 3) Star Trek Into The Darkness
London: 1) Django Unchained, 2) Fast & Furious 6, 3) Gravity
I can conclude that London has a broader preference of film genre and locations. Londoners are more willing to watch a variety of various films, whilst Scotland prefers more cheery, and less intense films.

Things i have learned:
1) Most film consumers are white. People of colour and varies ethnicity groups(besides white), make up less than 10% of cinema goers.
2) Only 14.9% of cinema goers are disable, making them the minority as non-disable make up 85.1%.  They are under represented across all film platforms.
